Do I need an NDIS Plan Review?

Are you not sure if a plan reassessment, variation or plan appeal is suitable for you? Feeling confused? Don’t stress, we’ve got some insight below to help you understand what to do next.

The first question to ask is – do you actually need a plan review?

  • Is your plan coming to an end and you want to review your funding
  • Are you running out of funds and your plan isn’t even close to ending
  • Are you unhappy with the funds allocated in your plan?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above see below to understand what sort of review your might need and how to go about requesting this.

If you are still unsure, you can get in touch with your Early Childhood Partner, Local Area Coordinator, NDIA Planner (this information is available on the first page of your NDIS plan), OR Support Coordinator to help with other ways to use your plan or access supports.

What sort of review do you need?

Are you not sure if a plan review, reassessment or appeal is suitable for you? Here are the types of reviews you may request:

  1. Plan Reassessment – you want to review your full plan funding
  2. Plan variation – you want to make changes to certain areas of the plan, or extend / continue the current plan for another 12 months
  3. Internal Review of a decision – you want to review the decision/outcome of your plan variation or reassessment (this may then lead to a review with the Administrative Appeals Tribunal – ATT)

Plan Reassessment

These types of reviews include:

  • Full plan review
  • Scheduled or unscheduled review
  • Change of circumstances (CoC) review
  • S48 review
Why do I need to request a plan reassessment?

If your circumstances have changed significantly, you will need to have a full plan reassessment. For example:

  • If the impact of your disability on your life has changed
  • You are going through a new life stage such as starting work, finishing school, moving out of home
  • There has been a change to your living arrangements or personal situation
  • Children younger than 7 with changing goals and developmental needs whose support needs have changed
When do I request a plan reassessment?

Every NDIS plan includes a ‘reassessment date’ which is a few weeks before your plan end date, however you can ask for an earlier reassessment date at ANY time and the NDIA will respond within 21 days and will contact you with their decision and their reason for the decision.

What happens after I request a plan reassessment?
  • When the NDIA conduct a reassessment, you can decide to create a new plan or vary the current plan, depending on your situation.
  • You can have a plan reassessment meeting face-to-face, over the phone, or video call.
  • You will also have the option to invite supports along to the meeting, such as a family member, friend, or Support Coordinator.

Plan Variation

These types of reviews include:

  • ‘Light touch’ plan review
  • Plan extension, rollover or continuation
  • New plan with similar supports and new plans with minor changes
Why might I need to request a plan variation?

You would likely request a plan VARIATION instead of a full plan reassessment if you have:

  • A change of circumstance which means you require crisis or emergency funding
  • Minor changes to your plan, such as update to reassessment date, your primary contact/representative
  • A small change to increase the funding of supports in the plan, or change the provider of a stated support
  • To change how your plan is managed i.e. from agency managed to plan managed or self managed etc.

These types of reviews include:

  • s100 review
  • Review of a reviewable decision (RORD)
Why might I need to request an internal review of a decision?

If you are not happy with an outcome or decision made by the NDIA regarding your plan variation or plan reassessment, and would like to request a review of the outcome or decision.

You can also ask the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) to review our decision, however you can only do this ONCE the decision has been internally reviewed by the NDIA.
