Talking to your kids about grown-up things

Talking to your kid about ‘grown-up’ things – body parts, puberty, periods, relationships – is an awkward conversation for any parent to have. It’s enough to have any parent running for the hills, and this can be even trickier when you have a child with Autism or an intellectual disability.

Thankfully, NSW health has come to the rescue with Planet Puberty – an online world of resources, workshops and more to help you navigate a whole new world. They also include links to picture books, flash cards and resources to help them.

Topics covered

They cover a wide array of topics in great detail and with accompanying resources. The types of topics included are:

  • The Body (body changes, periods, penises, breasts and growing taller to name just a few topics)
  • Feeling good (positive self images, mood swings, masturbation and maore)
  • Identity (positive self image, gender and sexuality, LGBTIQ)
  • Keeping safe (consent, cyber safety, safe people, personal space, decision making and social media are a good start)

Online Workshops

These include parent only topics like masturbation, periods, managing mood changes and wet dreams and erections.
