How to Find Physiotherapy Providers when I have funding in my NDIS plan
Physiotherapy is one of the most common supports people with disability look for under the NDIS. But it can also be one of the hardest services to find — because many physiotherapists don’t have space for new clients.
If you’re an NDIS participant or carer, knowing what physiotherapy is, how it can help, and where to look for funding in your NDIS plan will make the process much easier.
What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy (often called physio) helps people improve:
-
Movement and mobility
-
Strength and coordination
-
Everyday function
Physiotherapists use exercise programs, hands-on treatments, equipment, and education to help you:
-
Move more easily
-
Reduce pain
-
Build independence
Unlike general exercise, physiotherapy is tailored to your disability and health needs. Each plan is designed to support your NDIS goals.
Unlike general exercise, physiotherapy is tailored to your disability and health needs. Every treatment plan is based on a professional assessment, and is designed to help you reach your NDIS goals.
How Can Physiotherapy Help You?
Physiotherapy can support many areas, including:
-
Walking and mobility – for example, improving balance, gait, or stamina
-
Strength – for example, building muscles for daily activities
-
Pain management – for example, safe ways to reduce ongoing pain
-
Breathing support – for example, exercises for chest and lung health
-
Posture – for example, seating, spinal alignment, or positioning needs
-
Exercise programs – for example, safe and achievable routines for home or community
What Goals Can You Work Towards with Physio?
Physiotherapy under the NDIS can help you achieve goals like:
-
Being more independent at home and in the community
-
Reducing your risk of falls or injuries
-
Building stamina and strength to take part in school, work, or sports
-
Learning how to use mobility aids (like walkers or wheelchairs) safely
-
Recovering after surgery or injury
-
Gaining confidence to join community or recreational activities
Who Can Benefit from Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is useful across many disabilities and health conditions. Some examples include:
- Neurological conditions. For example such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, or acquired brain injury.
- Physical disabilities. For example like spinal cord injury or muscular dystrophy.
- Developmental conditions. For example including autism or global developmental delay (often focusing on gross motor skills).
- Age-related conditions. For example such as arthritis, osteoporosis, or balance issues.
- Chronic pain or fatigue conditions. For example like fibromyalgia or post-polio syndrome.
Where Does NDIS Funding for Physiotherapy Come From?
Physiotherapy is usually funded under Capacity Building in your NDIS plan, under the support budgets:
-
Improved Daily Living – this includes therapy assessments, reports, and sessions
-
Improved Health and Wellbeing – this includes exercise-based physio programs
If your physio recommends assistive technology (like standing frames, seating, or exercise equipment), this usually comes from your Capital Supports – Assistive Technology budget
This funding usually also needs an OT or physio assessment and NDIS approval. Important: Not every NDIS plan includes physiotherapy. If you need physio, make sure you request it at your plan meeting or review. Therapist reports or recommendations can help link it to your goals. Reports or recommendations from therapists will be needed.
How to Find an NDIS Physiotherapist
Finding an available physiotherapist can be tough. You may also need someone with specific experience—for example, with children, neurological conditions, or complex mobility needs.
MyCareSpace, helps NDIS participants find physiotherapists with space to take new clients—without the long waitlists. MyCareSpace will connect you directly with physios who match your needs and goals. They don’t just give you a long list of phone numbers to call. They actively connect you with physiotherapists who:
-
Have current availability to take on new clients
-
Ask if they understand your specific disability and goals
-
Can see you at home, in the community, or in a clinic
-
Are a registered NDIS provider (if required for your plan)
Physiotherapy through the NDIS can be life-changing. It’s not just about exercise—it’s about building independence, reducing risks, and supporting you to reach your goals.
Finding the right physio can feel overwhelming, but with the right support, you can connect with a therapist who understands your needs and has space to help now.
