Supported Independent Living (SIL): what changed from 27 August 2026

SIL changes in 2026

Changes to SIL in 2026: a guide for Participants:

Part of the latest NDIS reforms demand that an NDIS Provider delivering Supported Independent Living (SIL) must:

  1. a registered NDIS Provider that registered to deliver it, or
  2. be an unregistered existing NDIS Provider, already delivering iSIL, and has applied for registration by 1 October 2026.

This resource covers:

Does my SIL provider need to be NDIS  registered?

SIL providers must be registered. Existing unregistered providers have until 1 October 2026 to apply. New providers need registration before they deliver SIL.

What has changed when claiming SIL supports?

The SIL claim line item is 01_821_0138_1_1

See all SIL related line items by using our NDIS Price List Search Tool.

Providers and participants need to agree the usual support schedule in the service agreement.

What if my current NDIS SIL provider does not become NDIS registered?

If your current provider does not become NDIS registered, you will need to choose a registered NDIS SIL provider.

The NDIS Navigators at MyCareSpace can help you find a ne SIL provider: -> Find SIL Providers

What to ask your NDIS SIL Provider

Ask your NDIS SIL provider if it is registered or has applied to be registered.

If it looks like they will not be registered by 1 Oct 2026, start choosing a new SIL provider.

Does the same provider deliver SDA?

If the NDIS provider also supplies housing, your housing arrangement should not be affected: housing and SIL support are separate arrangements.

Does NDIS SIL provider registration change my plan or funding?

An NDIS provider’s registration status does not automatically change a participant’s plan or funding.

A plan change is only needed if the supports, funding or goals no longer work.

What do I need to consider when I choose a new NDIS SIL provider?

As the participant or nominee you get to make the decision of who you would like to be your new NDIS SIL Provider.

A new service agreement is needed before SIL starts with the new Provider.

A new agreement should be clear about

  • the supports provided
  • the hours or usual schedule
  • the responsibilities of the provider
  • the start date
  • the handover

Do I need a Plan Reassessment because my SIL provider changes?

No. This change is about provider registration and safeguards.

It does not mean a participant has to request a plan reassessment simply because the SIL provider changes.

A variation or reassessment may be relevant only when support needs, funding or the plan itself no longer meet the participant’s needs.
